Origin of the Universe
The Universe is believed to be never ending with its space and time. There have been many cosmologists over the years that have been discovering new explanations towards the beginning of the Universe. Cosmologists are astronomers who study cosmology (the origin and structure of the universe). They were the ones who discovered the theory that the Universe started with a big bang.
There are three main theories, the Big Bang, the Steady State and the Red Shift. The Red Shift is the evidence toward the Big Bang and the Steady State is what proves that it existed.

The Big Bang Theory
It all began about 10 billion years ago, when a Belgium physicist, Georges Lemaitre, first discovered The Big Bang Theory and that the universe came from a single source. This single source contained all the matter that is in the universe. This was all gathered in one big, hot, dense ball of radiation and subatomic particles. This ball exploded with a big bang expanding the matter. As it expanded it cooled and electrons, protons and neutrons formed, producing the universe and everything that is in. The matter that was thrown out by the big bang was denser in some places than the other. In these denser places, gravitational forces squeezed matter together which formed galaxies containing stars. When the Big Bang occurred, it formed all the asteroids, comets, planets, black holes, stars, moons, meteors and unidentified space matter that is floating around in space today.
The Red Shift Theory
The Red Shift Theory is believed to be the evidence towards the theory that the Universe is expanding. The Red Shift occurs when stars move rapidly in an outward direction, away from Earth. This was discovered by Edwin Hubble as he compared the distances of the galaxies and their spectra using different methods. He also showed that the amount of red shift was in proportion to the distance.
The Steady State Theory
The Steady State Theory is the theory in which the universe is never ending. This means that there is no way of telling how old the Universe is. It also shows that a process is followed of: stars and galaxies die, new ones form in their place. Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold and Fred Hoyle all proposed that the Steady State Theory was based on the perfect cosmological principle. This means that the Universe does not move ever.
